Unknown until a decade ago, Kivu Arabicas are starting to become established on the global specialty coffee map, with stunning cup profiles. The farm borders the Virunga National Park. The average size of land per farmer is 0.37 hectares
Against the odds, farmers living along the borders of DR Congo’s Virunga National Park are producing some of the world’s finest Arabica coffee.
Amid outbursts of conflict, this extraordinary landscape produces raw coffee beans with spectacular potential, while the National Park provides a vital refuge for endangered animals including the mountain gorilla.
We just had to try this coffee and it did not disappoint. With it’s light to medium body, light citric acidity, clean and balanced cup and wanted to pass this little gem onto our customers. It is UTZ organic and Fair-trade.
With 7000 coffee farming families being given training, it has reduced poverty by allowing the farmers to grow their incomes in an environmentally sustainable way. Also they are promoting women in this field, who organise leadership training and run six of the washing stations, it is possible to buy coffee grown and processed by female coffee farmers which is fabulous news.
